Why Rosefoam

A mattress is the piece of furniture you spend the most hours on and think about the least. It carries you for years, quietly, and you only notice it once it has started to fail: the dip in the middle, the spring you can feel through the quilting, the morning your back tells you before you are properly awake.

We make ours at Mbalala, on the Mukono to Jinja road. Not assembled here, not repacked here. Made here, by people whose names we know, in the sizes Ugandan beds are actually built in.

The Rosefoam plant at Mbalala, Mukono

The plant

One building, start to finish

The springs are set, the foam is cut, the quilting is stitched and the mattress is bagged in the same building. Nothing is subcontracted, which is the unglamorous reason we can tell you exactly what is inside anything we sell.

It also means there is nobody else to point at. If a seam goes, it comes back to Mbalala and we deal with it. That is not a promise about service, it is just how the ownership works.

What is inside

Springs and foam, and why it matters

Bonnell coils are laced together, so the mattress moves as one piece and holds a firm, even surface. Pocket springs sit in separate fabric pockets and compress on their own, which is why a pocket mattress barely passes movement across the bed. If you sleep next to somebody restless, that is the difference you are paying for.

On top of that goes foam. High density carries weight without collapsing into a dip. Memory foam softens against body heat and moulds to the shoulder and hip, which suits side sleepers. Latex does the opposite: it pushes back, and it breathes, which counts for more here than it does in a cold country.

Sizes

Cut to Ugandan beds

3 × 6, 4 × 6, 5 × 6 and 6 × 6. These are the sizes beds are actually built in here, which is why an imported mattress sold in European sizes will either swim in the frame or refuse to go in at all.

Anything outside those four is made on order. That is mostly hostels, hotels and schools, whose frames were welded by somebody local and match no catalogue anywhere.

Two names, one factory

Rosefoam and Ecofoam

Rosefoam is the leading brand: the pocket hybrids, the orthopaedic and high density ranges, the mattresses we put our best work into.

Ecofoam is the value brand, made on the same line by the same people, for a household that needs a decent mattress at a price that is possible this month. It is not a different factory and it is not seconds. It is a simpler build, honestly labelled.

Come and lie on one

You cannot judge a mattress from a photograph and we would rather you did not try. The factory shop at Mbalala has the full range on the floor. If you cannot get there, call and describe how you sleep, on your back, on your side, with a bad lower back, and we will tell you which of ours to look at.
